During the last few years, I've heard many adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) referring to their condition as adult onset ADHD. I've also had conversations with people who have only recently been diagnosed with this disorder, and they've been adamant that they never had ADHD during their childhood years. So, can one develop this behavioral disorder as an adult, or are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] we just seeing people who have had ADHD all [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] their lives, but were never diagnosed with the problem as children?
ADHD is typically characterized by three basic behavioral traits:
Inability to pay attention and/or to stay focused
Hyperactive behavior to a point where it becomes problematic
Impulsive behavior
In children with ADHD, all three [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of the above mentioned behavioral traits are usually easily recognized. Children will be inattentive in class, and often appear to be daydreaming. They have difficulty sitting still in a classroom, and will frequently cause disruptions. Lastly, their impulsiveness will cause them to speak out of turn, or to shout out answers before their teachers have even had a chance to finish asking [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] a question. In a nutshell, ADHD children are a real handful for teachers, and as a result, they often find themselves getting into trouble.
Adults with ADHD on the other hand, will almost always have learned how to curb these behavioral problems, at least to a certain extent. For example, an adult with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ADHD is not very likely to run around the office causing mayhem. They're also unlikely to speak out of turn or to interrupt others [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] since they know that it's rude to do so. So, how does ADHD affect adults in a working environment?
Adults with ADHD will often be late for work, not because [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] they couldn't care less, but because they often get distracted by other things. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] They're also forgetful, so it comes [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] as no surprise when an ADHD adult comes to work late because they couldn't find their car key, despite the fact that it was in their pocket. Other issues include things like angry outbursts, procrastination, mood swings, and etc.
Is adult onset ADHD to blame? According to the vast majority of medical experts, there's no such thing. Instead, they say that people are born with ADHD. If you don't have ADHD as a child, you won't have it as an adult either.
Approximately 60% of children with ADHD will live with the disorder until the day they die. There are also many children who never go for a proper diagnosis, and a number of these children might only be diagnosed with the disorder once they become adults. So, even though they only discover they have ADHD once they're adults, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] they have in fact had ADHD since childhood.
